Spartan Super - 10k: 25 obstacles across a 10k route, generally with some areas of high elevation. Spartan Beast - 21k: 30 obstacles, each one designed to test and challenge you physically and mentally. The route will generally be steep with hard ascents and tricky descents. The Gist. Held upon the one-time site of the 1960 Winter Olympics, this weekend brings a 30-obstacle Beast and the 24-hour Spartan Ultra World Championship to Olympic Valley, Calif. Racers can even test themselves with a Spartan Trail 10K — an obstacle-free, 6-mile foot race that takes place on a section of the infamous Western States 100
1) Run hard (but consistent) to the top of the hill (30-45 seconds, ideally) 2) Jog back down the hill. 3) Pick up your weight, and now hike to the top of the hill. 4) Hike the weight back down to the starting point. 5) Recover for 2 minutes. Repeat the above for desired time or distance.
If you fail a bunch of obstacles (10 or more) you may not finish in the time limit. The Ultra also has a bunch of obstacles in "Beast mode" which is the most difficult mode of Spartan obstacles (harder grips in the multi-rig, heavier weight in the herc hoist, etc). A weighted vest probably won't do much for you, honestly. It could lead to injury.
Disclaimer: also training for my first ultra beast in 2016. My plan is as follows: strength training for the next couple of months (with cardio sprinkled in to avoid endurance loss), then I plan to go hard with running (trails, mountains, and roads) for the following 3-4 months. FIND A SPARTAN BEAST NEAR YOU. Related: 30 Days to Spartan Beast: The First-Timer’s Training Plan to Survive. The Spartan Ultra. The Spartan Ultra is our hardest obstacle course race, and the ultimate test of endurance. The course is 50K (just over 31 miles) and pits you against 60 obstacles.
If you feel really dead take a day off, you’ll come back stronger. Here’s the break down: 1 long run 10-15 miles, 75% pace. 1 5k-3.5 miler, fastest pace possible. 2+ 5.5-7 milers, 85% pace (mixing in an Elliptical especially post death match day is a great way to get work in but help your legs actively recover.)
Spartan Beast. The Spartan Beast features 30 to 35 obstacles along 12 to 14 miles of rugged terrain. The Spartan Beast is known to be the most difficult Spartan Race in terms of completing the trifecta; some participants can't finish and are marked as DNF. Spartan Ultra. The Spartan Ultra features 60+ obstacles along 31+ miles of rugged terrain.
